From Army Infantry to Threat Detection SME: Training Makes a Difference

Even without a background in IT, you can make a career in Cybersecurity with the right guidance and training. In this edition of VetSec Impact Stories, one member’s journey exemplifies just that. Our community provided this member clarity when the rest of the internet was leading him astray. The training opportunities afforded to him through VetSec then launched his cybersecurity career in a direction he never imagined.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background before joining VetSec?

I joined the military straight out of high school and served in the Army for 8 years (Infantry). I had no real tech experience outside of PC gaming and fixing Xboxs with my dad growing up.

How did you first learn about VetSec, and what motivated you to get involved?

I’m pretty sure it was a random Google search for Veteran Cybersecurity resources. It seemed like as good a place as any, and I felt a bit lost on the direction of how to accomplish the goal of getting into the industry.

What were some of the biggest challenges or obstacles you faced in transitioning to a cybersecurity career before joining VetSec?

I didn’t know anyone in the industry, and the general internet is a bit of a mess on advice (thanks for nothing Reddit, other forums, etc). That being said, the biggest challenge is figuring out a path, what roles are realistic if you don’t have a background in tech, how do I use my benefits, etc.

Can you describe your experience with VetSec’s training and mentorship programs? What specific resources or support did you find most valuable?

For me, the community is enough of a resource. I inadvertently received mentorship from several individuals that helped me pave my career into what it is today.

How has the VetSec community impacted you personally and professionally?

I transitioned to cybersecurity after studying for 6 months, with a lot of mentorship and benefits provided from VetSec (Level Effect). It’s been a few years now and I’ve already went up to the Lead level. Connections at VetSec and the general community conversations have been instrumental in helping me keep current and on the razor’s edge of current happenings when other sources fail me. Even just being able to brainstorm ideas with members is a great benefit.

Can you share a specific moment or achievement during your time with VetSec that you are particularly proud of?

I was one of the first (the first?) selectee for Level Effect. That combined with SANS put me on a path I don’t think I could’ve ever anticipated. When I was selected for the benefit I was extremely excited. Graduating from the program with a Gold Certification in under 24 hours made me extremely proud, but also allowed me to represent VetSec and show what veterans can be capable of. (Zero experience -> Finishing 5 full investigations in 12 weeks).

Where are you currently in your cybersecurity career, and how did VetSec contribute to your success?

I’m currently a Threat Detection SME, and I think I’ve laid out the contribution quite a bit above.

Reflecting on your journey, how do you think your career and personal growth would have been different without VetSec? What are your future aspirations in the field of cybersecurity?

I think I wouldn’t be where I am today. Honestly, I probably would’ve given up and picked another direction. My original plan was so far off course, and without VetSec I would’ve stuck with that plan. I plan to run my own company, which is already being fleshed out.

What advice would you give to other veterans considering a career in cybersecurity and thinking about joining VetSec?

The community is very mix/max in all regards. You are going to get the “real” side of advice, the reality of the industry. That doesn’t mean that other options aren’t valid, but VetSec is meant to set you up for the best chance at success.
