From Army Maintenance to Cybersecurity Masters: The Power of Mentorship

In this edition of VetSec Impact Stories, Mohamed shares his path from mechanical maintenance in the Army through college education. The value he found in the mentorship from other veterans walking similar paths gave him the confidence to keep moving forward on his journey to finding his niche in this unique industry.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background before joining VetSec?

My name is Mohamed Kaba. Before joining VetSec, I served in the U.S. Army for several years, working in both mechanical maintenance and military intelligence. I also hold an AS in Accounting, a BS in Cybersecurity, and I’m currently pursuing my MS in Cybersecurity. My transition into the civilian sector has been both exciting and challenging, but it has helped me discover my passion for cybersecurity.

How did you first learn about VetSec, and what motivated you to get involved?

I first heard about VetSec through fellow veterans in an online cybersecurity forum. What caught my attention was how committed VetSec was to helping veterans make successful transitions into cybersecurity. I joined because I was looking for community, mentorship, and real-world guidance from those who had already walked the same path.

What were some of the biggest challenges or obstacles you faced in transitioning to a cybersecurity career before joining VetSec?

My biggest challenge was navigating the job market without much civilian experience, despite having a solid academic background. Translating military skills into terms that employers could understand and finding the right certifications or training paths were also major hurdles.

Can you describe your experience with VetSec’s training and mentorship programs? What specific resources or support did you find most valuable?

The mentorship was by far the most valuable aspect. VetSec provided access to professionals who had already made successful transitions and were willing to share insights on resumes, interviews, and technical skills. I also appreciated the Slack community, where I could ask questions, share progress, and stay motivated.

How has the VetSec community impacted you personally and professionally?

Personally, VetSec gave me a sense of belonging at a time when I was uncertain about my future. Professionally, it opened doors to networking opportunities, job leads, and study groups that helped me prepare for certifications like Security+. It’s truly been a cornerstone in my career development.

Can you share a specific moment or achievement during your time with VetSec that you are particularly proud of?

One standout moment was when I landed my first cybersecurity interview. I had shared my resume in the VetSec Slack for feedback and received constructive critiques that helped me revise it. The updated version helped me get noticed, and that moment made me realize how powerful the community could be.

Where are you currently in your cybersecurity career, and how did VetSec contribute to your success?

I’m currently applying for cybersecurity roles while wrapping up my master’s degree. Thanks to VetSec, I’ve developed a strong professional network, improved my technical knowledge, and gained clarity on career paths such as risk management and penetration testing. I’m confident and well-prepared for my next step.

Reflecting on your journey, how do you think your career and personal growth would have been different without VetSec? What are your future aspirations in the field of cybersecurity?

Without VetSec, I would likely still be navigating the transition with limited guidance and fewer connections. VetSec fast-tracked my learning and growth. Looking ahead, I aspire to work in cyber risk analysis or penetration testing and eventually transition into leadership roles where I can help other veterans break into the field.

What advice would you give to other veterans considering a career in cybersecurity and thinking about joining VetSec?

Do it. Don’t hesitate. VetSec is more than a resource—it’s a family. If you’re serious about cybersecurity, you’ll find the support, tools, and motivation you need here. Ask questions, stay engaged, and give back when you can.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience with VetSec or a message to the community?

Just a heartfelt thank you to the mentors, members, and admins of VetSec. Your dedication changes lives every day. I hope to one day pay it forward and be the same kind of support for others that I’ve received.
