VetSec Impact Story – Christen Reinhart
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background before joining VetSec?
I’m a U.S. Army veteran with over a decade of experience in IT, network administration, and satellite communications. I transitioned from military service to civilian contracting and eventually began pursuing cybersecurity as a long-term career. I’m currently working on my degree in cybersecurity while stacking hands-on certifications and lab experience.
2. How did you first learn about VetSec, and what motivated you to get involved?
I first learned about VetSec through a combination of LinkedIn networking and the VetsInTech AWS Cloud training program. I was looking for a supportive community of veterans pursuing cybersecurity, and VetSec stood out as a place where people genuinely want to help.
3. What were some of the biggest challenges or obstacles you faced in transitioning to a cybersecurity career before joining VetSec?
My biggest challenge was navigating the overwhelming number of cybersecurity training paths, certifications, and degree options. I also had to figure out how to properly leverage my VA benefits to support my education and professional development goals.
4. Can you describe your experience with VetSec’s training and mentorship programs? What specific resources or support did you find most valuable?
I haven’t yet fully utilized the mentorship program since I’ve been busy with school and college classes, but I’m registered and look forward to tapping into it in the future. In the meantime, the most valuable support has been the community’s guidance and feedback on career paths, certification roadmaps, and training programs like Level Effect.
5. How has the VetSec community impacted you personally and professionally?
VetSec has had a major impact by helping me understand and make the most of my VA education benefits. Community members also helped guide me through cybersecurity training resources, certification prep, and selecting programs like the Level Effect CDA training that align with my goals.
6. Can you share a specific moment or achievement during your time with VetSec that you are particularly proud of?
A recent achievement I’m proud of is completing the TCM Security PSAA certification while also managing a full college course load. It’s been a balancing act, but VetSec’s community helped keep me motivated and focused on tangible goals.
7. Where are you currently in your cybersecurity career, and how did VetSec contribute to your success?
I’m currently attending college to earn my associate degree in cybersecurity and plan to transfer to a 4-year university to pursue a bachelor’s in the field. VetSec helped me make an informed decision about what kind of degree would best complement my goals and experience.
8. Reflecting on your journey, how do you think your career and personal growth would have been different without VetSec? What are your future aspirations in the field of cybersecurity?
Without VetSec, I would’ve spent a lot more time spinning my wheels, trying to figure things out on my own. With their support, I’ve been able to move forward with clarity and confidence. In the future, I plan to specialize in cyber threat intelligence and AI risk governance as I build out my cybersecurity career.
9. What advice would you give to other veterans considering a career in cybersecurity and thinking about joining VetSec?
Get involved with a community like VetSec. Surrounding yourself with like-minded military veterans who are on the same path gives you direction, encouragement, and resources you might not find anywhere else.
10. Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience with VetSec or a message to the community?
Huge thanks to everyone in VetSec who contributes their time and knowledge. You’ve helped shape my career path more than you know. If you’re on the fence about reaching out or getting involved—just jump in. You’ll be glad you did.
